Only a short 8-hour flight from the U.S., Senegal welcomes you as a gateway to West Africa’s culture, history, and energy. This immersive journey offers meaningful opportunities to engage with local teachers, visit classrooms, and exchange ideas across cultures. Alongside these enriching professional experiences, you’ll enjoy the beauty and rhythm of a truly unique destination. From powerful historical sites to serene coastal moments, every part of this experience is crafted to inspire, educate, and rejuvenate.
Begin your adventure at the African Renaissance Monument, a towering 170-foot bronze statue that symbolizes strength, unity, and the future of the continent. Dive into Senegalese cuisine, during our Welcome lunch, and enjoy dishes infused with bold spices and tradition. We will visit one of Senegal’s most unique and captivating art forms during a hands-on Sandpainting Workshop in Dakar.
This vibrant artistic tradition, popular since the 1960s, transforms naturally sourced, un-dyed sands into stunning works of art. Guided by local artisans, you’ll discover how sand collected from iconic locations is carefully layered to create intricate pictures using simple tools and traditional techniques.
We also will spend time in Soumbédioune Market and enjoy wandering through the colorful artisan village, where dozens of local craftspeople showcase their talents across rows of bustling stalls. Here, you’ll find a rich collection of handcrafted treasures—from intricately carved wooden masks and handmade jewelry to beautifully woven baskets, leather goods, and bold, colorful African fabrics.
A highlight of the trip is the visit to Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once one of West Africa’s largest slave trading centers between the 15th and 19th centuries, the island today is a place of solemn remembrance and enduring hope—an experience that will move and transform you.
Our last 3 days are in Saly, a coastal haven where golden beaches invite you to unwind. From here, we will go on a morning safari to observe West African wildlife in its natural surroundings—a perfect balance of leisure and discovery.
Bonus: Your Participation May Be Tax-Deductible
Because this trip includes professional development and cross-cultural exchange, a portion of your expenses may qualify as a tax write-off. Please consult your tax advisor for eligibility based on your individual situation.
